Stipend and Tuition

All students admitted into the Interdepartmental Microbiology program are supported with a stipend of at least $1650 per month with tuition fully paid.  The program provides these funds during the first semester while students are performing research rotations. Following placement in a specific lab, student funding is supplied by the research mentor’s lab or department. This funding may be in the form of a grant-supported research assistantship or in a departmental teaching assistantship. In either case, full payment of tuition is included.  All students are also eligible for fellowships and scholarships from within the university and from outside sources. Some of these are listed on an accompanying page.

Health and Dental Benefits

The Virginia Tech graduate school provides a health insurance plan to all students
( For all students accepted into the Microbiology program, 90% of the health plan costs will be paid by the program. An optional dental coverage plan is available within this plan.

Fellowships and Scholarships

Entering and continuing students are encouraged to apply for awards.  These fellowships often pay a higher stipend than other sources and the experience of applying for and receiving research awards is excellent preparation for future career choices within the sciences.
